History of Lake Beseck

Lake Beseck has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century when it was created as a man-made reservoir. Its origins are tied to Connecticut’s industrial development, serving both practical and recreational purposes over the years.

Origins and Development

Beseck Lake wasn’t always the beautiful water body you see today. It was created in 1846 when Ellen Doyle Brook (also known as Beseck River) was dammed. The dam construction was completed in 1848, creating this picturesque lake in Middlefield, Connecticut.

A group of local entrepreneurs formed the Middlefield Reservoir Company around this time to store water for powering water wheels. This was a crucial development during the early Industrial Revolution in Connecticut. The dam itself cost $2,000 to build—a significant investment at the time!

What makes the dam particularly special is its revolutionary design. A.M. Bailey created the first bowed dam ever built, using an arch gravity design that was considered innovative for its time.

Historical Significance

When you visit Lake Beseck, you’re looking at a body of water that helped power up to 10 water wheels for local industries. This made the lake a central feature in Middlefield’s industrial development during the 19th century.

The creation of the lake also marked the beginning of an area known as Baileyville, named after the dam’s designer. The Department of Environmental Protection now owns the lake, which has evolved from its industrial beginnings to become a recreational treasure.

The lake covers 116 acres of surface area, making it a substantial water feature in Middlesex County. Over time, its purpose has shifted from purely industrial to recreational, though it still maintains its historical charm.

Recreational Activities

Lake Beseck offers a variety of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy throughout the year. The lake’s clear waters and surrounding natural areas provide plenty of options for those looking to spend time in nature.

Boating and Fishing

Lake Beseck is perfect for boating enthusiasts of all kinds. You can enjoy water skiing, jet skiing, or simply cruising around the lake in your boat. The open waters provide enough space for various watercraft activities without feeling crowded.

Fishing is another popular activity at Lake Beseck. The lake is home to several fish species that make for an exciting catch. You’ll want to bring your fishing gear along when visiting, especially during early morning or evening hours when fish are most active.

For residents of Middlefield and Rockfall, the private town beach offers convenient lake access. Remember that a beach pass is required, so be sure to get yours before planning your boating or fishing trip.

Hiking Trails

Around Lake Beseck, you’ll find beautiful hiking opportunities that showcase Connecticut’s natural beauty. The 75-acre open space parcel near the lake offers trails suitable for various skill levels.

The Middlefield Dog Park is located within this open space, making it a perfect destination if you’re bringing your four-legged friend along. You can enjoy a peaceful walk while your dog gets some exercise too.

In winter months, the trails transform into wonderful spots for snow activities. The lake area hosts special winter events including CT DEEP C.A.R.E. Ice Fishing demonstrations and Ice/Water Safety demos by the Middlefield Fire Department.

The hiking paths provide stunning views of the lake and surrounding landscape. You’ll want to bring a camera to capture the seasonal changes that make each visit unique.
