Early Development

Bunnells Pond wasn’t always the peaceful lake you see today. It was formed by constructing a dam on the Pequonnock River, creating the sizeable body of water that now sits in Beardsley Park. While records don’t clearly indicate who the pond was named after, we know the original dam created this beautiful feature that became central to the park’s design.

The pond became part of Beardsley Park, which spans 125 acres of rolling parkland. This park is a unique Connecticut treasure that eventually became home to the Beardsley Zoo – the only zoological garden in the state! Between 1932 and 1939, Bunnells Pond played an important role in local industry. “Ice Cutting” activities were documented during this period, showing how the pond’s frozen surface was harvested for ice. A tragic incident occurred on March 12, 1928, when eight-year-old Joseph Krehel wandered onto the ice and broke through, drowning in 12 feet of water.
