In the 1860s, Reverend John James McCook brought his sick son John to the Connecticut shoreline. The family believed in the healing properties of the “shore breezes.” They fell in love with the area and soon purchased 16 acres of shoreline property known then as Champlin Point.

The McCooks built a three-story home and a small chapel on this beautiful stretch of land. Their property included an impressive 1,750 feet of shoreline, giving them prime access to Niantic Bay.

The land remained in private hands until 1953, when the Town of East Lyme acquired it. The purchase was made specifically for the “benefit and enjoyment of the Town and its citizens.” This transition from private estate to public park marked a new chapter in its history.
