History of Woodbridge

Woodbridge, Connecticut has a rich past dating back to the colonial era. The town was founded in 1738 as the Parish of Amity. It combined parts of the colonial jurisdictions of New Haven and Milford.

In 1784, Woodbridge was officially incorporated by the Connecticut General Assembly. The town got its name from Reverend Benjamin Woodbridge, who served as the first parish minister from 1742 to 1785.

Early settlers in the area included Richard Sperry and Ralph Lines. They took up residence in what is now southeast Woodbridge around 1650.
